Title: A Weekend Back in Time in San Francisco
Category: History/Culture Author: Dina

My Perfect Weekend...

A bunch of history-buff friends and I traveled to San Francisco one summer and did a historical trip of the city. On the first day of our tour, we decided to experience as much of the city as possible. So we did the Taste of San Francisco Tour which took us throughout the city's most interesting and historic neighborhoods to sample the cuisine:

Fisherman's Wharf - Dungeness Crab, Fresh Water Bay Shrimp, Fresh Baked Sourdough Bread

North Beach - Aged Fine Prosciutto, Hot Italian Salami, Taleggio and Italian Cheeses, Sicilian Olives, Fresh Baked Italian Bread

Chinatown - BBQ Five Spice Spare Ribs, A Selection of Dim Sum, Exotic Fresh Fruits, Crisp Peking Duck

Mission - Pupusas with Curdito, Fresh Corn Tamales, Mini Flautas

Russian Hill - Irish Coffee from "The Buena Vista Pub"

My friends and I agreed that it was one of the best tours we've ever been on.

For the following day, our first stop was the Golden Gate Bridge. The world-famous bridge was built in the 1930s, at a cost of $33 million. About 10 workers died during the 4-year construction period. Pedestrians are allowed in the sidewalk where we enjoyed fantastic views of the neighboring towns.
We had lunch at La Terasse where they serve delicious European and French cuisine. I ordered the Duck Confit & Garlic Potatoes.
Next, we visited the legendary Alcatraz. This little island was originally the site of the first lighthouse in the Western United States. In 1934, it became a federal penitentiary, housing famous inmates like Al Capone. Now it is part of the 75-acre Golden Gate National Recreation Area. We enjoyed a tour of the cell house where visitors can see where the prisoners lived. The main prison block is still there. The cells are tiny and the "dark holes" gave us quite a chill.
For dinner, we went to Gary Danko's where we had Seared Filet of Beef and Herb Crusted Loin of Lamb. Gary Danko's is little expensive, though.
